This is a flexible course that allows you to explore your institution's resources, solidify your ideas of what it means to move into online learning, and explore resources with me to point you in new directions. This self-paced course is writen in the manner of an ongoing conversation between you and me—the instructional designer supporting you—as you move an existing, successful face-to-face course into a new online model.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe at least three issues about which you are most concerned as you move a face-to-face course online.
- Describe a strategy that will address each of your issues successfully.
- Identify the roles and functions that will support your transition to moving online successfully.
- Identify three teaching strategies you use in your face-to-face course then describe a strategy for each that you believe could achieve the same learning goal in an online classroom
- Identify various types of assessment strategies that you can implement to evaluate the learning that occurs in your online course.
Navigating the Course
This course is built around three broad themes: (1) getting started, (2) acknowledging the elephant in your room, and (3) making the move. To navigate the course, select from the module titles in the navigation band above.
As you navigate through each module's content, you will see a status indicator at the bottom of the page to help you guage how far you've come in the module. The status bar is not persistent from session to session, so if you are unable to complete a module in one session at the computer, you will want to note the page on which you stop so that you can easily return during the next learning session. Throughout the modules you will explore topics through self-guided text, short videos, reflection, action steps, and self-assessment quizzes. You can expect to spend close to 7 hours in completing the course.
Based upon pilot group reports, we advise you estimate the time required for each section as follows:
Getting Started: about 1 hour
Acknowledging the Elephant: about 3 hours
Making the Move: about 3 hours
