In this section we will discuss expectations. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary definies expectations as a feeling or belief about how successful or good someone or something will be. In the case of students and instructors, let's alter this definition to read: a feeling or belief about how one thinks something is supposed to be.
The words you use in your course have specific meanings to you yet they may be understood differently by the students who read them. Perceptions that students bring with them to your course are usually unspoken. These perceptions can have a larger impact on student success and satisfaction in online courses where the instructor and student are physically and often time separated. It's really important as we move online that we ensure that we're all "on the same page." We, as instructors, believe we are being clear and explicit. The students think they understand exactly what you mean. It's not usually that simple.
